Do RVs Need Special Organic Mattresses?

If you’re a seasoned RV’er, then you can skip this part. But if you’re just considering getting one or are new to the game, you should know a few things about RV mattresses.

RVs typically have smaller sleeping quarters than a standard home and therefore may require a special type of mattress to fit the available space and provide comfort for sleeping. While not all RVs require special mattresses, there are a few factors to consider when choosing an eco-friendly mattress for an RV.

Firstly, RV mattresses may need to be thinner than standard mattresses to fit in the available space.

Secondly, RVs will experience more movement and vibration than a stationary home, so choosing a mattress that can withstand these conditions while still providing proper support for the body during sleep is important. Some organic mattresses are specifically designed for RVs and may feature materials or construction methods that reduce motion transfer and provide support in a compact space.

Lastly, RV mattresses may need to be more durable and resistant to moisture and mold, as they may be exposed to outdoor elements, more frequent changes in climate, or even lack of circulation (if you leave it parked for long periods of time).

What Type of Organic RV Mattress Is Best?

In terms of the basic materials, what to look for in an organic RV mattress doesn’t differ that much from what you’ll want to look for in a regular organic mattress. Here’s what you’ll want to look for:

1. Organic Cotton

Organic cotton is one of the most common natural materials used for the outer parts of non-toxic RV mattresses. Organic cotton is grown without harmful pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, and it is not treated with harsh chemicals during manufacturing.

2. Natural Latex

Natural latex is made from the sap of rubber trees and is a renewable resource. It is naturally resistant to dust mites, mold, and bacteria, making it a good choice for those with allergies, respiratory issues, and mold-related illness. Look for a non-toxic RV mattress made with 100% natural latex, as some manufacturers may mix in synthetic materials.

3. Wool

Wool is a natural flame retardant and can be used as a filling material in mattresses. It is also naturally resistant to dust mites and bacteria. Look for an eco-friendly RV mattress that uses wool as a filling material and is free from chemical flame retardants.

If you’d prefer to skip the wool, there are also a couple of options below that for vegans, such as Rawganique and Essentia.

When possible, look for third-party certifications for these materials (or for the mattress as a whole). These include things like GOTS, GOLS, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD, and others. These labels have their pros and cons, but they do provide a certain level of accountability for brands.

Innerspring vs. Memory Foam vs. Harder “Stuffed” Mattresses

You’ll also want to consider what type of mattress you want, based on your preferences and available space.

Many of the mattresses below have innerspring options, which are made with coils and similar to “conventional” mattresses. These mattresses provide a balance of thickness and support, while still being lightweight.

Traditional memory foam mattresses are made from petroleum-based products, which can release harmful chemicals over time. Plant-based memory foam mattresses are better because they are made with plant oils that are considered to be less toxic. Memory foam isn’t necessarily the best choice, but if you do want one, consider a less-toxic RV mattress made with CertiPUR-US certified and/or plant-based foam. The CertiPUR-US certification ensures it’s made without things like synthetic flame retardants, heavy metals, or phthalates.

The third option is a harder “stuffed” mattress, which does not have springs or foam. It’s usually filled with something like organic cotton, kapok, wool, or a combination of various natural materials. This option may not be the best for everyone, as it doesn’t usually provide the support that everyone needs. However, they’re relatively easy to move and they have minimal motion transfer.

So, What Size is An RV Mattress?

RV mattresses come in various sizes, depending on the type of RV and the manufacturer. You can also order a custom-made organic RV mattress if you have specific needs, especially if you’re using a smaller vehicle like a van. Several of the brands below offer completely customizable options.

Here are some standard options to consider:

  1. RV Twin: 28″ x 75″
  2. RV Full/Double: 53″ x 75″
  3. RV Short Queen: 60″ x 75″
  4. RV Queen: 60″ x 80″
  5. RV King: 72″ x 80″

Rawganique is a sustainable home goods and fashion brand that harvests the eco-conscious powers of organic cotton, linen, and hemp to create sweatshop-free and hand-crafted products in the USA and Europe. Their products are made with even the most chemically-sensitive in mind.

Aside from their range of clothes and accessories, they also offer some of the best organic RV mattresses on the eco market—especially if you need something that is relatively thin and lightweight.

The “Dreamer” is a medium firm, organic cotton mattress with a natural latex core and organic wool as a natural fire retardant. We love that it’s completely free from harsh synthetic chemicals and comes in an array of different sizes for both small and big spaces.

If you are vegan, you can also have a look at the â€śFairhaven” mattress. It’s handmade in the USA with grown in the USA 100% organic cotton fill and organic cotton casing. Again, it’s available in every size imaginable. (Note that if you get one of the thicker vegan options, you will need a doctor’s note because it does not meet standard flame retardant standards.
